Sylvan Backpack Program
You have the opportunity to help provide food for hungry children by participating in our church Backpack Program. The Backpack Program provides nutritious food to Sylvan Elementary School children at risk for hunger during the weekends. The children are identified by their school and given loaner backpacks on Friday containing a variety of food for the weekend. Receiving food in backpacks not grocery bags gives children a greater sense of privacy. The backpacks are returned to the school on Monday and church volunteers re-stock them for the next weekend.
We have volunteers to pick-up and deliver the backpacks to the school as well as volunteers who will fill the backpacks. Currently, we are providing 10 backpacks each week. As the school identifies other children, we could be asked to provide more packs. Please support this program by donating new or ?gently used? backpacks and non-perishable food. Food items need to be child-friendly, non-perishable, lightweight and easily consumed (something young children can handle by themselves). The pack with all the food needs to weigh less than 8 pounds.
Donated items can be dropped off at the church. If you would rather donate money, someone will do the shopping for you. Just indicate Backpack program in the memo portion of your check or put a note on any cash donations. The types of food we put in the backpacks are: cereal cups, granola or cereal bars, oatmeal, pop tarts, canned meat, individual size vegetables, individual size soup, macaroni and cheese, canned pasta with meat, individual size rice, ramen noodles, individual size applesauce or fruit cups, juice boxes, and snack items (crackers, raisins, jello snack packs, popcorn, etc). Each week the volunteers that fill the backpacks will look at the inventory and identify food items that are needed most. Currently, we need canned pasta with meat, soups, and fruit cups.
